ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 REAL MADRID
22.30 The players are coming back out and Ronaldo is on. Woo hoo!
HALF TIME
That was a rather enjoyable 45 minutes. Ateltico came out flying and started better, but on balance I reckon Real looked the better team and the one more likely to finish this game with 11 players on the pitch. Atletico lead, but more importantly, Ray Winstone has had a shave it seems.
45 + 1 min James turns his man 20 yards out, takes two steps and unleashes a shot from the edge of the area on the inside right. He can't get any bend on it though and it flies wide. That's half time.
44 min Ooooooooooooohhh what an effort this is from Raul Garcia, who unleashes a searing effort from 35 yards. It may have been going wide but was veering in towards goal with the ferocity of Sandor Clegane, forcing Casillas to push it behind. The first corner is defended back behind but the second finds the head of Raul Garcia, who gets in front of Coentrao but thunders his header over from eight yards. Should have scored.
41 min Varane unleashes a crunching shot from 30 yards. The goal was in the same postcode, I guess, but there's little more you can say about this. Meanwhile I've been distracted by this remarkable email from a man just called Johnny, who probably has better things to be doing than reading this liveblog...
E-mailHello Mr. Dan, Very much enjoying your MBM on the Atletico v Madrid match. Tonight I'm rooting for Real, mainly because my life depends on it. I put a gamble on the PSG game earlier, who failed to beat Evian (a bottle of water, last time I checked), so I trebled up on Real to win that back. The wife's gone mental and kicked me out again. Standing outside my front door in the missus's pink dressing gown with a stella and my phone, refreshing your updates like a lunatic. And Real are 1-0 down. I've seen better days, Mr. Dan.
Be lucky,
Johnny
39 min Bale and James link up on the right and the Welshman finds himself with a clear shot at goal from just to the right, 18 yards out. He goes with the outside of his boot but knocks it wide.
38 min Coentra looks to jink inside from the left but is met by a solid, thunking defensive line. It's cleared, leaving Mandzukic one-on-one with Varane but the Frenchman is quick enough to have it covered.
36 min Modric fires in a firm, diagonal cross from around 30 yards out, which meets the head of James. He does well to turn a header goalwards but sees it bounce a yard or so wide.
34 min Corner to Real as Mandzukic turns a cross behind. It's a decent delivery, curled in from the right by James, but Mandzukic again heads clear well. Real then concede a free kick for handball, Xabi Alonso the culprit.
33 min Siqueira plays a low ball into the box, where Griezmann looks to lay off. The ball breaks to Kroos though and he brings it forward only to be floored by Mandzukic. Such is the Atletico way.
29 min A lull. A needed one, at that, such has been the pace of the game. Before being sent off, Simeone had been leaping around like Buster Bluth on juice and afterwards he began geeing up the crowd. He is not a cautious man.
27 min It's a RED CARD for Diego Simeone. He's not happy with something and pats the assistant referee on the back of the head and gets sent to the stands for his cheek.
25 min Bale dances around down the right, near the byline, surrounded by three players and wins a corner. It's taken short and pulled back; Atletico clear but Bale goes down that same right-hand channel inside the box and tees up James to shoot this time. Moya just gets enought on it and it's cleared a second time. It's getting a bit spicy this one.
23 min Ramos looked badly hurt a minute ago, and was off the pitch for that free kick, but with the yellow card successfully avoided he's all better and looking spry once again. Juanfran's turn to look groggy now as he goes in hard on Coentrao, straight through the Portugese, and smacks his nose square into the left-back's knee.
21 min The free kick, from 45 yards out, is knocked straight down the right and Miranda gets goal-side of his marker, er, James Rodriguez, to nod it back across goal, whence it's nodded behind for a goal kick.
19 min Players are surrounding the referee now as Mandzukic and Ramos collide, the former hurting his head, the latter his knee. Free kick goes Mandzukic's way.
17 min Free kick to Real as Koke leaves a foot trailing high and raked across Carvajal's shins, up near halfway on the Real right. No card, but there is moments later as the cross is turned behind for a corner and Tiago can't keep his mouth shut. Yellow for the former Chelsea man. The ball is headed out and Modric volleys over from an angle, 20 yards out.
15 min A long diagonal ball finds Mandzukick, who offloads first time for Griezmann in space. The Frenchman hits a first-time snap shot that goes behind for a corner. Eventually, it's cleared. Bale looks to break down the right touch line but Tiago shuts him down with a good tackle.
14 min A nice little backheel from Coentrao constitutes a reverse pass for James running down the inside right. Into the box, goes the Colombian midfielder, but he whips the ball across goal, away from everyone and behind for a goal kick.
13 min I pass therefore I am.
10 min The ball is remaining on the edge of the screen, which means I can't see it. The ball is crossed in by Real from the right, from Carvajal I believe, but it's easily caught by Moya. Moments later Coentrao launches a poor cross from deep miles behind. James and Bale haven't had a touch yet, Real playing everything through the full backs.
8 min Real win a throw-in down the right, about 15 yards from the byline, but they're harried straight back to halfway. Apparently Khedira is in Munich watching his little brother play a division two game. Coentrao looks to whip a cross in from the left but it's lumped clear.
5 min Right you might not want to trust me that much on the timings here, as I, er, can't see the clock on my screen, as the picture has been cropped at either side. It's been a great early start from the home side, a furious tempo that's brought a shot, a corner, a goal and now a penalty appeal already as Koke goes down in the box under pressure, although in his defence he gets straight back up again looking to win the ball back high up the pitch rather than look for the penalty.
GoalGOAL!!! Atletic 1-0 Real (Mandzukic 2) Atletico's corner is cleared but a long ball is lumped back in towards the Real box. The leaping Raul Garcia flicks it on and Mandzukic muscles in between the two centre backs and flicks a nice low, accurate finish past Casillas and into the bottom corner.
1 min Peep! We're off and Mandzukic goes on a bustling run down the inside right into the box. Varane makes a tackle and it goes behind but then...
21.28 Ronaldo on the bench: yay or nay? "Of course 'nay'," I'd say, because watching a tight defensive side such as Atletico is little fun if they're not up against a thrilling attacking side, and there are few players as attacking or thrilling as Ronaldo. The world is split though. First, Colin Hughes
E-mailGood - Bale played a lot better in the second half of Tuesday's match. I think he feels a bit inferior to CR7.
But...
21.22 Time for a quick email before kick-off, courtesy of Real (I assume) fan Blessing Nyakasoka:
E-mailAtletico as usual have gone in maintaing a stable team. Mandzukic gives a formidable replacement to Diego, Antonio is dynamic and i'd say the 100m€ was money well spent.
On the other hand my team has created a headache for Carlo look Di Maria is class ever since he came in the absence of Khedira people have stood up and noticed, club and country, and here come James? I'm a Madrid fan but i dont see where James really fits in: Kroos for Khedira we can stomach but James for Di Maria we regurgitate.
James is a big, shiny World Cup name I'd say. Neither he nor Kroos is needed, but Real have La Decima, could easily have won the league this season with the same squad and have little need to improve; it's therefore largely about image, I reckon.
21.19 So to reiterate, here are the teams in full, complete with Atletico subs. Real wantaways Di Maria and Khedira are nowhere to be seen (although I've just seen rumours that Khedira is in Munich tonight):
Atletico Madrid: 1 Moya, 20 Juanfran, 23 Miranda, 2 Godin, 3 Siqueira, 14 Gabi, 5 Tiago, 6 Koke, 8 Raul Garcia, 7 Griezmann, 9 Mandzukic,
Subs: 13 Oblak, 15 Ansaldi, 24 Gimenez, 4, Suarez, 17 Saul, 21 Rodriguez, 11 Jimenez
Real Madrid: 1 Casillas, 2 Varane, 3 Ramos, 5 Coentrao, 8 Kroos, 9 Benzema, 10 James, 11 Bale, 14 Xabi Alonso, 15 Carvajal, 19 Modric
Subs: 13 Keylor Navas, 3 Pepe, 7 Ronaldo, 12 Marcelo, 17 Arebeloa, 23 Isco, 24 Illarra
21.14 Just over 15 minutes until things get underway then. With Ronaldo only fit to start on the bench, I would imagine that means a wider role for James Rodriguez rather than the number 10 position from which he excelled in Brazil. I wouldn't wager my house on that reducing his effectiveness though. Largely because I rent.
21.01 I know you'll all still be enraptured by this liveblog at 11pm tonight, but elsewhere on the Telegraph Football pages we're going to have an exclusive feature where Gary Neville meets Louis van Gaal. If you're a United fan, that'll be right up your street
